#writeyourwitchcraft 03-27-2026
I've done this set of 52 questions before a couple times, and they've always been helpful. They were originally written by @baduhennasraven on Tumblr, but the original post and blog don't seem to be around anymore. At least, I can't seem to find them.
1. What draws me to witchcraft?
I keep coming back to witchcraft, even as a logical and science-loving person, because it fascinates me to see not only how the practice changes and enhances my view of the world, but how it does so for others as well.
2. How do I see the divine?
I don’t know if I would call it divine, per say, but the Universe itself is definitely something special to me that I can’t quite specify. I have a little glass tray with matching cups that I’ve informally dedicated as a place to sit down and share a nice warm beverage and have a “chat” with it in thanks for when something in my life goes particularly well, but it doesn’t even feel like a solid offering-type deal.
The Universe doesn’t feel like a deity to me, but it’s definitely something beyond a spirit, something beyond my full comprehension. It’s just so incredibly vast, and there’s so much we still don’t know about it, that I don’t think I could really assign it a label for how I interact with it in my practice.
I also, as a bit of a personal joke regarding my terrible shiny hunting luck in Pokemon games, have a clay sculpture of a six-sided die that I made myself on the glass tray as a nod to “RNGesus”, or the aspect of random chance in the Universe.
3. What in witchcraft makes me happy?
The “crafting” part! As I recover and gain more energy, I’ve found myself wanting to do things again. A lot of those things are crafty! So far I’ve:
- Dug up a packet of crayola modeling clay to make the RNGesus dice and a pen holder for my “magic” fountain pen.
- Trimmed down spare notebooks to fit in my little traveler’s notebook style Book and plan to make my own inserts once I’ve burned through those.
- Made planetary squares on canvas and cut them out to have little “coasters” to easily draw their energies to as I learn to work with them.
- Made a/this neocities page to join Aesethewitch’s Witch Web-ring and collate some of my resources and personal writing in one place that I have complete control over.
I’ve had a lot of fun making more tools for my practice, and I find that it motivates me to study more and cast more spells so that I use what I’ve made!
4. Do I want to follow a path that has to do with a little nature, or a lot of nature?
I’d like a moderate amount of nature on my path I suppose. I’m not very good at growing plants or keeping them alive; but I’d like to be able to identify the ones in my backyard and around my bio-region, and be able to know both their magical and mundane uses.
I’d also like to get more in tune with the seasonal transitions that occur in my bio-region if I can.
5. What areas of witchcraft would I like to learn more about?
- Planetary magic—both the traditional seven planets and Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto.
- The other structures in the Universe (i.e. Stars and their life cycles, Nebulas, black holes, quasars, etc.) and how they could tie into a magical practice.
- Plants! As I’m doing my current deck study, I’m researching the plants that make up each card. I look at their scientific names and families; their physical descriptions, growth habits, and habitats; if there is anything in particular they are commonly known or used for mundanely; if they have any traditional or modern medicinal uses, and their lore and occult/magical correspondences.
6. Where do my witchy talents lie?
This is tough for me to answer, as I feel like I haven’t been consistent enough in practice over the years to develop a talent for anything. I guess I could say I’m fairly good at divination. I’ve been spot on with playing cards and tarot cards often enough that my skeptical brain can’t find too much to pick at. I have also found that I’m pretty good at using what I have around/with/on me to make an effective spell/charm/enchantment on the fly if I need to.
7. What kind of deities, if any, do I want to honor?
See my answer to question 1.
8. How do I believe magic works?
I’m still working that out for myself. I feel as if drawing from an energy source—whether that source is oneself, a planetary body, the earth, etc.— and manipulating that energy with the tools of practice that one finds necessary is definitely a part of how magic gets done. The question I have for myself is if I believe that those “energies” are something that exists in a real-life way and are maybe something science hasn’t discovered yet, or if it’s more of a psychological-based thing.
9. Simple or elaborate spells/rituals? Why?
Simple. While I’m better than I used to be, I simply don’t have the energy to do big, elaborate spells or rituals. It has to be something I can do fast, and something that doesn’t take a ton of focus to do—brain fog and I are old friends at this point and it certainly doesn’t help when I’m trying to keep focus to get a spell done.
10. What are my views on cursing/hexing?
I don’t do baneful magic often, as I don’t tend to feel strong emotions in general, let alone the anger I would need to want to get back at someone magically. If someone else wants to do baneful magic, that’s up to them and them alone. I don’t believe in the Three-fold law or anything like that. But, y’know, if you’re going to get your hands dirty just make sure you’ve really thought about why you’re doing what you’re doing and be diligent with your spiritual/magical hygiene.
For me personally, I break baneful magic down into three categories. From least harmful to most I categorize them as:
- Jinxes: A.K.A. “mild inconvenience be upon ye.” Most of it is just directing some energy and intent through a focus to cause someone a minor and annoying one-off misfortune. Usually used for That Asshole, you know the one, that shows up as you drive down the highway. My favorite one is “May you step on a Lego,” in various levels of detail.
- Hexes: This is the baneful magic that I use with time limits and/or conditions for removal. It makes the target’s life pretty unpleasant, with the level of unpleasantness scaling with how vindictive I feel, but if they manage to meet the release conditions (which are usually along the lines of becoming a better person in regards to whatever forced my hand in the first place) then it’ll get better. I’ve only done this twice.
- Curses: I’ve never actually used a Curse as I define it, and I hope I never have to. I consider this type to be the last resort, a “this person is irredeemable and/or an active danger to myself and others and mundane + previous magical methods aren’t working” type of baneful magic and if I have my way it will follow that person as long as possible, preferably for the rest of their life. If I’m placing a Curse on someone, that thing is going to last.
11. Do I want to practice something similar to my ancestors?
Nope. Lots of Christianity on both sides, very right-wing Christian on my Dad’s side. I’m the first witchy person that I know of in my family, so I’ll make my own path and practice, and maybe one day I can pass some of what I’ve learned on to any niblings I may have (if they’re interested).
12. What are the basic morals and ethics I feel I should live by?
This question is always a bit difficult to put into words to answer, but I think the most important ones to me are:
- Treat others as you would want to be treated.
- Be kind whenever possible, but don’t forget to stand up for yourself.
- Care for the Earth and your environment. We only have one planet, and she’s put up with a lot.
13. What in nature am I drawn to; the ocean, animals, the trees, etc?
Space, space, space. I get an actual, physical ache in my chest when I think about it because I want to be up there so badly. I think if I saw the Earth from orbit, or even better, the Moon, it would genuinely change me down to my soul. Like, it would be the closest thing I could get to a religious experience.
14. Which (witchy) holidays, if any, would I like to celebrate and how?
I don’t currently celebrate any witchy holidays. I just celebrate the mundane ones with my family. I would, however, like to one day create my own personal set of holidays and special dates based off of the patterns of my bio-region.
15. How do I believe divination works?
I feel as if it is a combination of one’s own subconscious mind and the Universe (particularly the random aspect) in some way that allows one to not only reflect and work on the self, but evaluate possible future paths/decisions.
16. Would I like to work with a group some of the time, all of the time or not at all?
I am horrendously shy and socially awkward and have a hard time understanding people’s tone and social cues. I think if I had the right group with the right people that I had gotten to know and consider friends over several months/years, then I would like to do a working or two with them every few months. Otherwise I’m more comfortable doing my own thing as a solitary witch.
17. Which aspects of witchcraft appeal to me most, which the least?
- The most: The ability, whether through a psychological effect or some currently un-explainable force, to enact one’s will (to a certain extent) on the world around them.
- The least: Spirit work and spirits in general. I’m still not quite sure if I believe in spirits or not. I tend to talk to a lot of things around me like they’re alive, but I don’t think that actually counts as a belief that they are actually conscious and a spirit.
18. What do I believe happens to us when we die?
My optimistic side likes to believe that we all end up on the Rainbow Bridge someday to reunite with the loved ones that we have lost, both human and animal. The pessimistic side believes that once you die, that’s it. No afterlife, no awareness, nothing. Just ceasing to exist. I hope that my optimistic side is right.
19. How do I see mythological creatures?
Some might be real in the sense that sightings were a normal animal that we had no explanation for or knowledge of at the time, but now that we know they exist and have studied them we can see how they inspired the stories.
20. When do I feel most magical?
Oddly enough, right now, in my bed. My bed is basically an altar with how much I do on it. Tarot pulls, research, crafting tools or components, etc. I keep my current tarot deck and my Book on it, as well as the books I’m using for research. Really the only thing I don’t do on my bed is active spell-casting, as I generally need more room than I have on my lap desk to get everything organized—and I’m not going to burn things on a very flammable mattress.
21. How much is witchcraft woven into my daily life; is this too much, too little or just enough?
My daily life doesn’t really have that much witchcraft woven into it at the moment. A lot of it is just saying hello to the animals I see in my backyard, walking around the yard and appreciating the nature around me with my dog, and framing the things I see as something magical. I also try to work on something witch-related each night before bed, whether that be reading one of the many magic-related books in the TBR pile, taking notes in my Book, or pulling a tarot card for my deck study.
22. What kind of witch do I feel I am?
Right now, some kind of fire-based witch. I like fire, and I like burning things, and that transfers over to my craft. I don’t think there’s a spell in my current repertoire that doesn’t have some type of fire or burning in it.
23. Which texts/quotes best describe my current path?
The Hope Poem, from a Tumblr post.
“Hope is a weapon,
Hope is a skill,
Hope is a plant you can care for,
or kill.
Hope is a discipline,
something you choose,
hard to stop looking for,
easy to lose.
Hope isn’t something to have or to take,
if you can’t find it it’s something you make.
Make it from willpower,
Make it from spite,
learn how to weaponize love in a fight.
Hope is a shield,
and a thing to defend.
End in itself,
and a means to an end.”
Excerpt from the Minecraft End Poem.
“and the universe said I love you
and the universe said you have played the game well
and the universe said everything you need is within you
and the universe said you are stronger than you know
and the universe said you are the daylight
and the universe said you are the night
and the universe said the darkness you fight is within you
and the universe said the light you seek is within you
and the universe said you are not alone
and the universe said you are not separate from every other thing
and the universe said you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code
and the universe said I love you because you are love.”
24. Do I like research and gathering info, or do I like things handed to me?
If I have an interest in the topic, or am hyper-focusing on it, then I love to do research.
25. Which things about witchcraft worry or scare me?
I don’t know if I’d say the thought scares me, but a lot of why I’m iffy about spirits being real has to do with how inexplicably nervous the thought makes me.
26. What is my favorite element?
FIRE. I don’t know why, I don’t have a concrete reason, but I love candles and fires in the fireplace and bonfires and lighting things on fire. I am of the opinion that (keeping fire safety in mind at all times) anything can burn if you try hard enough!
27. How do I see gender (roles) in witchcraft?
Considering my current state with my own gender is just ???? I don’t use them. Anyone can be a witch regardless of their gender, end of story.
28. Am I interested more in magic, or spirituality?
Magic, definitely. Spirituality is something that I have trouble wrapping my head around.
29. Do I like to be told how to do things, or would I rather figure it out on my own?
It depends on the thing, and if I’m familiar with it or not. On my own I’ll learn, usually by fucking around and finding out, or looking up the instructions if that’s not working. If I’m in a group, and it’s something like a group working? Then I need to be told how to do things down to the tiniest detail, because I live in fear of messing up in front of other people.
30. What rules, if any, do I live by when it comes to witchcraft and magic?
The same as from question 12, really:
- Treat others as you would want to be treated.
- Be kind whenever possible, but don’t forget to stand up for yourself.
- Care for the Earth and your environment. We only have one planet, and she's put up with a lot.
31. What do I gain from witchcraft and magic?
Self-confidence, a sense of control in a world that sometimes feels like it’s an actively burning dumpster-fire, and a sense of whimsy and the ability to find joy in the small things around me.
32. Formal or informal rituals/spells? Why?
Informal. I find that trying to do anything formally just makes my brain stick on the details and distracts me from doing the magic.
33. What subject do I love to study?
Right now, plants! It goes with my current deck study and I’m having a lot of fun looking at the lore and traditional uses in particular. It’s really interesting to see where their correspondences came from!
34. What is my favorite type of magic; candle, sympathetic, sigils, etc?
Any type with a good amount of fire involved! For safety reasons that usually means some candle magic.
35. What would my perfect witchy day be like?
Nothing too complicated. I’d like to wake up before noon, spend some time outside with my dog, do a spell or two once I came back inside, and work through some of my witchy TBR pile.
36. Would I want to be dedicated/initiated?
No.
37. Who do I honor (ex: deities, ancestors, myself, etc), and how do I, or would I like to honor them?
The Universe. While I don’t really know what I’d label the Universe as, right now part of how I honor it (or spend time with it?) is star-gazing on clear nights and remembering that I am a body made of stardust. I am a part of the Universe, created by it, and by honoring myself I honor it as well.
38. How do I create a sacred/witchy space?
My bed and my altar are already witchy spaces in my home, and I don’t often have a need for another space. However, in the rare case that I do need to designate a space as witchy for the time being, I grab my witchy stuff, find a space, put the stuff down. Ta-da! The space is now witchy. If I’m really feeling fancy and have more energy, I’ll use my circle-marking rope to make a circle.
39. What do I believe is needed for a successful spell/ritual?
A witch (truly, the most important part), their preferred tools and ingredients, and doing the spell.
40. Which cultures do I draw from in my witchcraft?
I don’t know if you could call the few witches I follow on Tumblr a culture, but their practices inspire quite a bit of my practice. I also draw a bit from Traditional English Witchcraft, and I’m sure there’s some influence from Wicca still hanging around in the minute details.
41. What is my learning style; books, websites, videos, more hands-on?
I’d say books and hands on learning are the biggest ones. I love to read and I have a decent collection of books on witchcraft and related topics. I also like to try out the things that I read about if possible and learn through doing the task/spell/ritual/etc.
42. What, if anything, in my mundane life influences my witchcraft?
My mental and physical health issues. They can make it quite difficult to have the energy to practice and the focus or brainpower to study.
43. What are my hobbies, how do I (or can I) incorporate them in my witchcraft?
Journaling is one. I used to use the Bullet Journal method when I was in college to organize my life, and in keeping those journals I was able to express a lot of creativity through them. I don’t use that method anymore, but the creativity is still there and I channel it into my Book.
44. Where do my non-witchy talents lie, how do I (or can I) incorporate them in my witchcraft?
I’ve been told that I have a nice voice, and I did minor in vocal performance in college. I’m rusty, and having COVID back in 2024 definitely messed with my lung capacity, but I could incorporate song into my craft. Perhaps making a spell that is meant to be sung? Or turning an already existing song into a spell? There was a song that my choir sung for a Halloween concert called “Gravedigger” by (I think) David J. Matthews that I loved. I don’t know what kind of spell I could do with or incorporating that song, but it has always felt particularly magical to me.
45. What would my dream witchy life look like? What steps can I take to work towards it?
Having enough energy to live my life and be able to participate in my craft without worrying about if my health will crash over the following days. Being able to get out into nature, whether that be at the local park or the nearest nature trail, for more than just a few minutes. A good start towards that would be finishing out my physical therapy and keeping up a consistent exercise regime with a good diet, enough hydration, and enough salt.
46. What would my dream sacred space/witchy home look like? What steps can I take to work towards it?
A beautiful, historical home with lots of space for my kitties to explore and for me to decorate. If I could manage it, maybe a dedicated room for my witchcraft and crafting. To get there I’d have to recover enough to be able to manage a house on my own, have a stable income to pay for it, and maybe even find a housemate depending on how expensive the house would be.
47. What symbols correspond with me; runes, animals, flowers, gemstones, etc?
I know my birthstone is a diamond and my birth flower is a daisy, if those count.
48. Am I an open and proud witch, or do I (need to) hide my craft?
I’m somewhat open about my craft, in that my immediate family know that I’m a witch. My parents definitely don’t quite understand it, but my sister has gotten into tarot reading and has done a spell or two over the years with me. I don’t know if she’d call herself a witch though. Otherwise I’m not going to be telling anyone. My Mom’s side of the family probably wouldn’t mind too much, but my Dad’s side is very Christian and MAGA, Trump-loving Republicans. So… absolutely will not be telling them about my craft (among other things).
49. What are my favorite witchy items/tools; divination tool, ritual tool, décor, clothing, etc?
- Favorite Tool = Does fire count as a tool? Because if so, then that would be my various lighters that I have to light stuff up.
- Divination Tool = The Pressed Flower Tarot by Celeste Thyme. It reminds me so strongly of my Nana and how we used to press flowers together that I pretty much got instantly attached to it. I’m doing a deck study with it now, which is slow going because I tend to get distracted by new ideas and go off on those before coming back to what I was doing before. It’s been fun though!
- Decor = My miniature curio cabinet! It no longer sits on my altar, but it feels witchy no matter where I put it. It’s full of small jars that contain miniature bones, dead bugs, small feathers, etc. It’s also got some of my cooler crystals in it for display.
- I don’t know what I’d classify it as, but my Book and the fountain pen I use with it are two things that I adore.
50. What is holding me back in my craft?
My mental and physical health, but I’m getting better a little at a time!
51. What is my pre-spell/ritual routine?
I don’t really have one? I just wash my hands, gather my materials, put it all on my workspace, and if I’m really feeling fancy mark out a circle with the circle-marking rope.
52. What are my ultimate witchy goals and how can I work towards them?
I don’t know if I’d say I have any “Ultimate” witchy goals at this time.
